Florence
The birthplace of the Renaissance and modern science, Florence is a city beyond culture. For many years the city and surrounding towns belonged to the independent Republic of Firenze, which was dominated politically by the famous Medici family. The Medici lineage was one of great tradition and principle; a Medici must act as a normal citizen on the streets, always secure the status of the family, and hold a great appreciation for fine art and ancient philosophy. The Medicis were certainly willing to back this appreciation financially, commissioning many of the great artworks of the period such as David by Michelangelo, as well as the completion of the Duomo in the centre of the city.
